Model of the Month-Ericka Bessette

Check out our interview with the gorgeous Ericka Bessette. She is truly what you call a role model! Humble and talented, Ericka tells us a little about herself.

Ericka B headshot21. Where you are from?

I’m from Connecticut. I grew up in the northwest hills, but now live in central Connecticut.

2. What you are into… studies, hobbies, special skills etc..?

I am a nursing major. I work on the weekends as a subacute/rehab Nurse. I love working with people, helping people get better, and helping their families through the whole process of getting better. In my free time I love to play bingo, read magazines, and catch up on the latest medical breakthroughs and fashion trends.

3. Favorite clients from the biz?Ericka B lingere 8

Some of my favorite clients from the business would be Ekineyo, Madrag and Target. The sets were fun, the crews on all sets were great to work with, and I obviously LOVE all of their clothes!!

4. Dreams/goals any thing else of interest (any other dream clients?)?

My goal as a model in this industry is to be true to myself and to others. To embrace women to love themselves unconditionally, and to not fear societies pressures to look a certain way, but rather prove that we are all individuals unique in our own way. Dream clients of mine would be Torrid, Ashley Stewart and Lane Bryant.

Ericka B neutral25. Career highlights?

I began my modeling career in 2014. I have worked with clients like Target, Madrag, and recently Ekineyo.

6. How did you get into modeling or acting?

I have always been the girl that TRIED to be body positive, and told friends to love what they have rather than be miserable trying to change it. With that in mind, I thought what better way to BE body positive than to become a plus size model and show the world yes I have curves and yes there’s nothing wrong with that! I began my modeling career at my aunt’s house. I had my cousin snap a few polaroids of myself, and submitted those photos to a NYC based agency. I signed with that agency in 2014. I recently signed with Bicoastal MGMT and couldn’t be any happier! I cannot wait to see where my modeling career takes me.

Selena, creator of Manik Magazine discusses #NYFWPlus!

This week we had the opportunity to sit and chat with Selena, creator and editor of Manik Magazine! She discusses how she got into the business and what motivated her to start her own very successful magazine. Not only did she create Manik Magazine, but she helped create New York Fashion Week Plus; a platform to connect all those in the plus size fashion industry. Even some of our very own Bicoastal models will be apart of the event! See below of our models attending 🙂 Also, check out for more details!

  1. So how did you get started?
The core idea of NYFW Plus was birthed by Brandee Joyner- Executive Editor/ Co-Publisher of Manik Mag and myself. We were brainstorming on how to elevate plus-size fashion, out of frustration- understanding that plus-size designers aren’t well respected and plus-size women have a lot more fashion options than they think. We were trying to think of a way that could bring awareness to plus-size designers by creating a platform that would connect plus-size designers to celebrity stylists, fashion editors, plus-size celebrities, and merchandise coordinators. These are the people that influence change
  2. What motivated you?
Plus-size celebrities on the red carpet doing an injustice to themselves, plus-size consumers not being aware of their fashion options, and the fact that brands like Target and H&M overlook plus-size designers to collaborate with for plus-size collections.
  3. What are you most excited about for this year? This year, we’re all excited about the new changes we’re bringing to the plus-size fashion and modeling industry through Manik Magazine and NYFW Plus. With Manik Magazine doing more outreach; targeting influencers beyond the “plus-size community” bringing more awareness to plus-size designers, models, and the overall plus-size subculture and NYFW Plus connecting plus-size designers with key fashion influencers we’re looking to see a revolution in plus-size fashion and nothing beats the feeling of taking steps in the right direction toward building a lasting legacy.
